Violetcloud sighed lightly as she woke from her dreamless sleep, a lovely high tone in the damp winter air that threatened snow. She remained curled in a tight ball, her small frame attempting to beat the cold in her sleep. She was racked with a tiny shiver that made her long white whiskers twitch, tickling the fur on her black-striped cheeks. The queen opened her large eyes, slowly diminishing the last bit of sleepy haze clinging to her thoughts. As she stretched one limb after another, she became more alert. She took care not to wake one of her comrades, looking at them all with warmth in her eyes. They were her friends. Though there weren't currently any kits in the nursery, all the queens and nannies always stayed close and helped each other overcome any obstacles they may face. Although their bonds sometimes were tested by the tests bestowed upon them by Yarrow, they all really loved each other -- at least in Violetcloud's mind. She smiled as she rolled her shoulders back and forth to ease the stiffness from the cold air, reveling in the sound of her clanmate's purrs.
She stood up straight, finished with waking herself up. Her height was nothing formidable, but it bothered her none. She breathed in deeply, trying to grab onto the hint of sweet scent still trapped in the moss of their deep-set den. The fragrant herbs and wildflowers had long since been removed, dead, and there wasn't anything to replenish them -- but that didn't change the fact that Violetcloud pretended their comforting smells were still there. She ignored the nostalgia she felt for the summer and spring, preferring to smother it with her slightly overactive imagination.
The queen shook her head, lightly scolding the warriors and huntresses to herself. It wasn't a day to be sleeping in! It was about to snow; the prey wouldn't be running for very long! She gave a private little grin as she stepped just outside the queen's den, laying down to wait for some entertainment. She started to fidget as her eyes flickered around, trying to find something interesting until someone woke up or the dawn patrol came back. Finally, she settled on examining the sky. She stared at it with wistfulness in her eyes, bleached a silver reminiscent of her pelt in the dull light. The sun had just risen, but there was no beautiful dawn procession on this cloudy day. She blinked, clearing her mind of negativity. Then, she saw a grey rainbow hidden in the clouds and smiled -- Yarrow really loves me, she thought with wonder.

` Groveshadow ! ` The tom padded into the camp, a very slim mouse dangling in his jaws and his eyes steady as they stared with a blank expression ahead of him. He was not in the best mood after the episode with the huntress apprentice and the warrior apprentice, but he had to push that aside for now. The pain in his side had started to subside and it was dim enough that he had managed to catch a piece of prey for himself...well, for the Clan at least. It was still early in the day and he was not that hungry and he knew he could wait till he went out again later before he ate something for himself. Right now, he was more in the mood for something that would help him feel a bit better and he knew that something lat in the den where the queens took their nests and spent their time.
` The thick furred brown tom with a white chest and white paws, looked up at the sky when a cold wind blew against his ragged pelt and he flicked his ears at the thought of more snow. He was not a fan of the little white flacks that seemed to take over the land in this season, but he did like the cold that was brought with it. His thick pelt helped keep the heat that his body produced close to him and keep his heart pumping even in the coldest times and he was not looking forward to the green-leaf that would be here eventually. The warmer moons always seemed to take a large toll on the large tom and he preferred not to dwell on that fact for too long. Flicking his tail and lower his green gaze towards the queen's den, he smiled when he recognized Violetcloud laying outside the den, making the most of the morning.
` Smiling to himself, he set down the mouse and licked his thick fur, trying to get the tangles out...even though for some it might look like he was trying to just clean it out. For Groveshadow to truly groom his pelt, he would have to sit there for a long time seeing as there was just too much fur and so little time to go over all of it at one time. For him, it would just be easier to jump into a lake or river and let the water course through the pelt to get rid of everything that decided to lurk in the brown forest....though water did annoy him seeing as his pelt plastered to his body then and takes moons for it to dry. The only good thing that comes from that is that his muscles actually show at that point as they ripple the wet fur. When he seemed to get enough of the tangles, his eyes went back to the younger she-cat and he picked up the mouse in his jaws again.
` Padding up to the well-groomed she-cat, he almost started to wonder what his own pelt seemed to look like in contrast to her silver, black marbled pelt. Like you should care; it's not your job to look good. Flicking his ears at the thought, he placed the thin mouse in front of the blue-eyed queen and smiled warmly as he mewed, "Not much there, but I thought you might enjoy it." The thing about Groveshadiow was that there were only two sets of cats he was actually nice around: the leader and the queens. He never understood how toms could settle down and be with only one she-cat, for then all the fun is drained away when you no longer need to show the she-cat how willing you are to be with them and well...to him flirting was the main fun to do around the camp.

Violetcloud was just about to retreat back into the warm den, bored and chilled to the bone by the less-than-savory weather, until she noticed a cat coming towards the camp. His form was rich and warm against the grey monotone of the scene around her. She sighed dreamily, making a small squeak of eagerness despite herself. The queen felt deprived of feline contact, even though she'd only been sitting alone for about 5 minutes. She smiled as she saw the little mouse dangling from his mouth, happy with his progress despite the leaf-bare that wasn't bearing much prey.
Being the vocal and open cat that she was, she congratulated him for his catch. "Oh, Groveshadow! How devoted you are! The others are all being lazy, sleeping, missing this prime time of hunting," her voice tinkled with light laughter and ending in a small flick of her ear. "Not that I really need to know much about that, no, but I do pick things up after awhile," she said with a hint of pride in her voice. Although she had only just left her position as a nanny to become a queen, not having to take care of kits left her with open ears.
Brightly, Violetcloud met his smile with her own as he dropped the little mouse at her feet. The small gesture of friendliness made her smile even more broadly. She lessened its impact a bit, making sure she didn't give off a desperate vibe or look deformed from it. Of course, that didn't mean that she was any less pleased -- just had a regulated reflection of it. "Oh, Groveshadow! How lovely of you! And to think, I was just getting hungry. Thank you! It's much more than those lazy bums are doing in their beds! Would you like to share?" she maintained her smile through during her speech, a light teasing pulling at her words. She remembered to be polite to her superior at the end, but she couldn't ignore the fact that it was scrawny and she was getting gradually more hungry.

` The words sounded like honey as she spoke first to him, so full of sweetness and happiness. See, why couldn't all she-cats be like this? So accepting of their job as queens to be the cats to give birth to kits and nothing more. Why did their have to be those mouse-brained rebellious she-cats who thought being huntresses made them equal to toms, when it was clear they would never be equal to them. They had wanted to make something of their lives, to have something to make them feel important and yet being a queen was important enough for them. Being a queen is all they deserve to be. Yarrow put she-cats on this world for a reason and that is so that they can help our society survive with more kits. Noting more, nothing less. Her words that praised him for his catch, made the smile on his face grow a bit more and he took the praise without a second thought.
` The deputy flicked his tail as his gaze slightly went towards the mouth to the queen's den wondering who was all awake in that den, but then he forced himself to concentrate on one she-cat at a time. As her words slipped from her mouth again to soothe him even more, causing the pain in his side to subside all together, he flicked his ears. "Would you like to share?" The words made him remember the trouble he had not long ago in the territory with the she-cat huntress apprentice, but he forced the memory away and shook his head as the warm smiled made his face glow slight. "Oh, but a beautiful queen such as yourself needs all the nutrition she can get in this season." He would gladly take the prey from a huntress as he had attempted to earlier before Whitepaw disobeyed him and instead gave her catch to Blackpaw to share, but he'd never take prey away from a queen.
` He looked over the she-cat and thought about how his scar that had torn away the fur on his flank had not tampered his love for all she-cats. In a way, it fueled his desire for them even more, seeing as every time he thought about the one she-cat he had let go because the tom he had fought had managed to match Groveshadow's strength and actually give him a reason to let go of the she-cat. I had been younger then, but rest assured, if something like that happens and a tom backs away from me because he chose to stop the stalemate, then I won't be giving up a she-cat that easily. Besides, nothing was gong to happen anyway. I like to flirt with she-casts, but I still have to find one that will give me good kits. He flicked his tail, looking over Violetcloud once more. ooc: Low muse. -_-

Violetcloud looked over her deputy with a judging eye, taking in his appearance quickly and sizing him up in a way that was effective and would commit to her memory easily. Although she tended to be forgetful of many things, once she looked over another a few times she would always know exactly what they looked like. Every scar, every unsymmetrical whisker, every nicked ear, every torn claw -- that which was considered mundane to many was extremely meaningful to her. Of course, she didn't let her smile drop as she did this; it was only a split second critique, anyway.
She liked what she saw. Of course Violetcloud had known what her own deputy had looked like -- she had actually admired him as a kit. She'd always wondered how he got those scars, the testament to his status as a deputy, one of the most experienced cats in the entire clan...especially the forbidding-looking one on his right flank that left him with an absence of fur. That long, soft fur, so warm and cold and unique and pleasantly normal -- just like his eyes, eyes she's seen so cold and unfeeling, but right now were full of cheerfulness...multi-dimensional. Untouchable and strong...she looked at him with glowing eyes. Oh, how pretty he was! Perhaps not the most gorgeous tom in the clan, but probably the most balanced. The queen drank it all in with approval dainty and feather-like.
Eyes like summer grass in a dark field smiled at her as he began to speak in a calm voice, deep with maturity and strength. "Why thank you, Groveshadow! I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart..." she giggled as she began to eat the little piece of prey, neatly disposing of it. She was silently glad her stomach hadn't rumbled before eating it.
"So, sweet Groveshadow, any patrols to organize today?" she purred. Obviously the question was half-joking; she knew absolutely nothing about those sort of things, nor did she want to.
OOC: My muse was very low. This post was bad -- eh, at least it's something. x-x

` Groveshadow ! ` The tom flicked his tail, looking her over even more, taking in everything about her. He knew she wouldn't have scars like he did since she was one of the good she-cats in the Clan that accepted the fact that she was a queen and not something to get hurt. Every time the huntresses go out on the hunt during leaf-bare, he always imagines something happening to them to get them to see where their place really is. She-cat rebels always annoy him up to the tip of his ears, although tom rebels - in the sense of fighting and even ignoring orders to a point - he tends to overlook seeing as he was that sort of kit as well. If he ever had a daughter, he knew that he would make sure that daughter ended up in this den and not with the huntresses otherwise she would no longer be his daughter. He never understood their need, after all he thought that all she-cats liked kits, why would they ever want to do anything else with their lives?
` "Why thank you, Groveshadow! I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart..." The words flowed into his ears, making a smile cross his face and vanish quickly. He always enjoyed the praise he got from queens, one reason why he loved to flirt with them so often. He knew this one was young, but age never really mattered as long as you don't settle down with them for good...again, which is another thing he could not understand about some toms. Why settle down when you can have so many she-cats? "You're very welcome. If there is ever anything I can do for you, you just be sure to let me know." He would do just about anything for queens, to a limit that he had still not had to define. Queens were always just so much easier to be around then even toms, for he didn't have to be so harsh and serious all the time and he could allow himself to open as he flirted and let them know he was interested.
` He watched as the elegant she-cat leaned forward to the mouse, little as it was with very little meat on its bones. He knew that the huntresses were going to be heading out on a hunt to get larger prey any day now and he smiled at the thought. Even though he was against the idea of huntresses, that was the one thing they were good for. The had the task of heading out and risking their lives with the larger prey one cat on his own could never take down. There were times when huntresses where even killed from the hunt and he never really saw much point in grieving for the loss. If those she-cats had just stayed where they were meant to be, they would have lived longer and felt a lot more joy and happiness in their lives. After all, he wondered just how many queens even felt bad about their lives. They give birth to kits who fuel the survival of the Clan. You'd think they'd love that, since so many toms will do anything to woo them over. He chuckled slightly at the thought, but shook his head slightly.
` "So, sweet Groveshadow, any patrols to organize today?" The words seemed to shake him out of his own self-consumed thoughts and even though if a huntress had asked him that, he would have let out a snarl, he just smiled at the she-cat as if the words were nothing but that, words. In a way they were just words though, seeing as queens never cared about the business of the rest of the Clan. "They're all taken care of." He knew he would wouldn't be here if he still had business to do, seeing as he did take his position as deputy seriously, even under Feverstar. When another swift breeze came about and he realized how could it must be out here for the she-cat, he mewed sweetly, "Surely you're cold? Shall we continue a conversation in the den so you can keep warm?" He knew the queen's den stayed nice and warm, seeing as AshClan always wanted the kits to stay strong, especially in leaf-bare.
